For the Love of Reading

I used to love reading. In elementary and high school I could often be found curled up in my room reading until well past midnight on a week night- just a few more pages… 1 more chapter…I need to finish this book tonight!! Feeling a bit tired the next day at school was worth knowing how a certain book ended.

However, all this changed when I got to university. Reading was no longer something to do for leisure, for fun,  or on a rainy afternoon. No, reading had become work. No matter what the course was, every night there was some 50 page article or essay to read on one subject or another. Now don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed university and what I studied. In fact, I learned a great deal from all the readings I had to do, and have kept and reread many. But when I finally had a spare moment from school work, the last thing I wanted to do was pick up a book.

I probably read less then 10 books for pleasure during my university years. So when it was time to start thinking of new years resolutions this past January deciding to get back into reading was a no-brainer. There were a few reasons I made this resolution, but the main one was that since being out of university and not being “forced” to read anything, I could slowly feel my mind getting less sharp. Recalling names, words, fact etc was getting slightly harder and I did not like that one bit! At first my resolution was to read a book a month. January and February went well, but I started to slack a bit in March and April. Then at the suggestion of my roommate I got a library card and joined Goodreads.com – an online book and reading community. They have a reading challenge where you set a goal of how many books you want to read in a year and it helps you track your progress. I set my goal at 15.

Today I started what will be my 15th book this year The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest by Stieg Larsson. I have definitely regained my love and enjoyment of curling up with a book and don’t see it stopping anytime soon!

The Last Supper

As you know by now, tomorrow I start the 3 week Dr Joshi Detox- no processed foods, no sugars etc. So I thought I would treat myself to a special meal tonight. At first I was leaning towards a greasy, cheesy, carbolicious pizza- 3 things I am going to miss-but then got a sudden craving for Ethiopian food. I only tried Ethiopian food for the first time about 6 weeks ago, but as soon as I had put the first bite in my mouth I knew it was love- the tangy, spongy injera (a yeast-risen flatbread) and the perfectly stewed and spiced veggies and lentils- a perfect combination!

My mind was made up- Ethiopian food it was! So my roommate and I went to Nazareth Restaurant (Bloor & Ossington) and got the Vegetarian Combo Platter (pictured above). All that food for only $10! The taste, quantity, and price can’t be beaten. If you’ve never tried Ethiopian food I definitely suggest getting your butt over to Nazareth asap!
